ICC Penalizes Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas for Conduct During West Indies Test

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced disciplinary actions against Pakistan cricketers Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas following their conduct during the first Test match of the ICC World Test Championship series against the West Indies in Tarouba. The penalties were imposed for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

In a press release, the ICC detailed that Khurram Shahzad was fined 15 percent of his match fee for his actions, while Mohammad Abbas received an official reprimand. Both players were found to have violated Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which addresses the use of language, actions, or gestures that could provoke an aggressive response from a batter after their dismissal in an international match.

The specific incidents occurred during the West Indies' second innings. Khurram Shahzad was penalized for his aggressive celebration near Shai Hope, who had just been dismissed during the 17th over. This action was viewed as potentially inciting a hostile reaction from the batter. Similarly, Abbas was cited for celebrating in an animated manner close to Jomel Warrican, the final wicket of the innings.

Both players acknowledged their infractions and accepted the proposed sanctions from Jeff Crowe, a member of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. As a result, there was no need for formal hearings. The charges were brought forth by on-field umpires Alex Wharf and Richard Kettleborough, along with third umpire Jayaraman Madanagopal.

According to the ICC, Level 1 breaches can result in a range of penalties, from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of a player's match fee, along with the possibility of one or two demerit points being added to their disciplinary records. In this case, both Shahzad and Abbas received one demerit point each, but neither had any prior offenses in the last 24 months.

This announcement of penalties comes on the heels of Pakistan's defeat to the West Indies, as they lost the Tarouba Test by 90 runs on the fourth day. This match was the first in a two-match series, and the outcome has significant implications for Pakistan's standing in the ICC World Test Championship. The series continues to be a critical opportunity for both teams to gain valuable points in the ongoing competition.
