In a landmark decision for the soccer community in West Virginia, the West Virginia Soccer Association (WVSA) has voted to approve the integration of U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS) with the U.S. Soccer Federation. This historic vote, which was decided by a narrow margin of just one percent against, signals a pivotal moment for club soccer in the state.
Dave Laraba, the Executive Director of the WVSA, expressed his enthusiasm for this development, marking his 40th year attending the Annual General Meeting where the vote took place. He acknowledged the challenges involved in reaching this decision but remains optimistic about the potential benefits this integration will bring to soccer in West Virginia. "This integration will prove to improve the sport in the Mountain State," Laraba stated.
One of the key advantages of this integration is the increased availability of resources aimed at enhancing coaching education and supporting grassroots soccer programs. Laraba highlighted that approximately 90 percent of the WVSA's members are involved at the grassroots level, indicating a strong foundation for the sport in the region. He noted, "There’s going to be more resources available to concentrate [on] coaching education, grassroots – recreational level support and that’s a good thing for us."
In comparison to larger states, only about 10 percent of soccer teams in West Virginia are classified as higher-level club teams. This integration is expected to bolster support for these teams, as well as provide additional resources for referees, safety measures, and overall community engagement in soccer.
While the integration process is set to unfold over the next two years, with the official timeline beginning on September 1, 2026, Laraba emphasized that immediate changes may not be evident. However, he believes that this initiative will help unify the soccer community, aligning practices and standards across the board. The USYS is the first major governing body in American club soccer to take this significant step towards integration with U.S. Soccer.
