Rookie safety Jacob Thomas joined the list of injured Vikings players in last night’s Broncos game.
Evidently in pain, Thomas left the game and was taken off on a cart, a bad sign that may have ignited some doom-and-gloom forecasting. Andrew Krammer of The Star Tribune described the defender going to the locker room, writing, “Safety Jacob Thomas being carted into the locker room with an apparent right leg injury is not the first quarter development they were looking for in this one.”
Oftentimes, the cart is a telltale sign of a serious problem, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Consider what Alec Lewis of The Athleticshared earlier today: “Vikings UDFA safety Jacob Thomas has a Grade 1 ankle sprain, a source tells The Athletic. Considered very positive news after Friday’s injury. Thomas has had an exceptional training camp and has been in line to make the 53-man roster.”

An undrafted talent, Thomas got to training camp with very little hype. He has since put on a clinic for how a young fella ought to make a case for requiring roster real estate. Watching #39 means seeing somebody who evidently has spent time with his nose in the playbook, allowing him to play decisively from within Brian Flores’ complex scheme.
That’s often the key, isn’t it? Putting in that extra effort to master the scheme allows a player to move freely and without the hindrance of the mental gears needing to work overtime. Usually, the player who makes the game look effortless has put a ton of effort into his craft.

Looking under the hood means seeing that the most promising aspect of Thomas’s effort came in pass coverage, an area of his game where he demanded a 91.4 grade.
Thomas got moved around the defense. Most commonly, the kid got put into that center fielder position, tasked with being a free safety for 46 snaps. He then had 24 snaps in the box, 7 snaps in the slot, and 6 snaps added onto the end of the d-line as a pseudo edge rusher.
Anybody who has watched the Vikings’ defense play ball over these past couple of seasons knows that being versatile is a coveted ability for Brian Flores. Jacob Thomas appears to be somebody who can fulfill the Flores ethos.

Right now, Josh Metellus looks like the only true certainty at safety. He’ll be a starter no matter what. Theo Jackson is sorting through his own minor bumps and bruises and Jay Ward is trying to carve out a larger role. Tavierre Thomas is a roster favorite but is mostly in town for specials. Jakobe Thomas is getting back into game shape and Kahlef Hailassie looks like he’ll get shuffled to the practice squad.
Jacob Thomas, 22, boasts good size at 6’1″ and 212 pounds. The Vikings are a better football team when he’s flying around. Minnesota plays the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. That game will take place at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday, September 13th.
Hopefully, the kid is fully healthy in time for that debut game of the 2026 regular season.
