EVANSTON, IL – Northwestern University's football program is set to debut its stunning new home, Ryan Field, a facility that is making headlines as college football's most expensive stadium. With a price tag of $875 million, this state-of-the-art venue is designed to provide fans with an unparalleled experience, emphasizing proximity to the action.
The design of Ryan Field cleverly incorporates the dimensions of a standard basketball court, measuring 94 feet. According to Pat Ryan Jr., the CEO of Ryan Sports Development, the furthest seat in the stadium is only one-and-a-half basketball courts away from the end zone, ensuring that fans are never too far from the game. The stadium is scheduled to open its doors on Friday, October 2, when Northwestern hosts Penn State, marking a significant milestone for the university's athletic program.
“We really do believe this will be the best stadium to watch a football game or stadium concert in America,” Ryan stated during a press conference. He emphasized that even the worst seat is just 136 feet from the sidelines, which is an impressive feat for a stadium of this size. He compared the sight lines at Ryan Field to those found in basketball arenas, claiming they are superior to many venues that have half the capacity of the new stadium.
Although the seating capacity has decreased from the previous venue's 47,000 to 35,000, the new Ryan Field occupies a much larger footprint and is situated near the picturesque banks of Lake Michigan. This strategic location provides a scenic backdrop that complements the stadium's modern design. Inside, the stadium boasts field-level suites with bars, an impressive 10,000 square feet of LED scoreboard displays, and 244 televisions strategically placed throughout the venue. The canopy roofing covers all 35,000 seats while allowing natural elements to interact with the field surface, which features the advanced FieldTurf Trico One system. This cutting-edge turf meets the joint standards set by the NFL and NFLPA, ensuring a high-quality playing surface.
One of the most exciting features of the new stadium is the ‘Wildcat Zone,’ which places 2,000 students directly behind the end zone.
