After draw number two to mark the beginning of Andoni Iraola’s run, he new boss was asked the question on every fan’s mind. A deal with PSG for Bradley Barcola is said to have been reached after an extended negotiation period. He should be flying into Liverpool this weekend to complete his medical before anything is confirmed. But as the days tick by and the transfer deadline day looms closer, people are eager for news on any remaining deals.
In the press conference after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest, Iraola deflected any questions about the French international.
“I cannot tell you anything right now but it is true that there are things going on and that is normal,” Iraola said. “We are in the last weeks of the market and now we have to wait to see the squad that we will have on September 2, and this is who we are. We will then work with certainties. Now everything is quite uncertain and same for every team. But this is how the competition works. So now wait just some more days and we work with what we have after the market closes.”
Certainly these first two fixtures have laid bare the frailties of this squad. While Barcola joining would be a step in the right direction, it’s likely that there are some other deals being ironed out behind closed door as well. Over the last several years, transfer deadline days have been dull for the Reds, who tend to get their work done early. But this year might end up being a throwback. I’m not expecting last second helicopter rides or anything (though, to be clear, I wouldn’t say no to this), but perhaps some entertaining chaos to end with.
