Is New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr.'s place on the team set in stone?
Tracy recorded 1,000 yards from scrimmage in each of his first two seasons from 2024-25. Power back Cam Skattebo emerged as the Giants' starter last season before getting hurt and is projected to break out next season if he stays healthy. With Devin Singletary in the mix and Najee Harris looking to return to form, Tracy now faces serious competition.
Pro Football Focus named Tracy as a player on the Giants' roster bubble ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown date of Aug. 30.
Tracy has operated as New York’s backup running back over the past two seasons, posting at least 740 rushing yards in every campaign with a cumulative 74.0 PFF rushing grade. However, he’s endured a shaky preseason, producing a 40.0 overall PFF grade thanks to allowing a sack (and big hit) on Jaxson Dart as well as fumbling in Week 2.
Before the second preseason contest, the Giants signed Najee Harris as depth behind Cam Skattebo, complicating Tracy’s role in the team’s backfield. While Tracy could still make the roster if John Harbaugh elects to retain four running backs, his spot seems tenuous, especially with Devin Singletary (75.0 PFF receiving grade) also shining in August.
Skattebo and Tracy coexisted well while splitting carries last season, and Singletary also proved effective with the touches he received. Roles eventually became established among the three backs even as the offensive backfield grew crowded.
Harris' presence adds a new element to that dynamic. Until he proves he is still the caliber of player he was before his injury once he takes the field in 2026, Tracy may not need to worry about his spot on the team. His prominence in the offense, however, may be another story.
