In a commanding display of offensive prowess, Jadan Baugh rushed for 160 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Florida Gators opened the Jon Sumrall era with a resounding 66-21 victory over Florida Atlantic University (FAU) on Saturday night in Gainesville, Florida.
Florida's quarterback Aaron Philo also impressed, throwing for 275 yards and accounting for four total touchdowns. This win marks the Gators' seventh consecutive home opener victory for a new head coach and stands as the highest-scoring season opener for the program since 1994.
Jon Sumrall made a memorable entrance into the sold-out Swamp, complete with fire, smoke, and strobe lights. His pregame speech energized the crowd, and the team responded with a performance that showcased their offensive capabilities. Notably, Florida continued to push the tempo even in the final moments of the game, reminiscent of the aggressive style of legendary coach Steve Spurrier.
The Gators wasted no time in establishing control, scoring on their first six possessions. Philo connected with Vernell Brown III for a 49-yard touchdown, followed by a 12-yard touchdown pass to his former Georgia Tech teammate, Bailey Stockton. Philo also showcased his mobility by scrambling for a touchdown on a fourth down, extending the lead to 24-7. Brown had a standout performance, finishing the game with 117 yards on six receptions.
As the game progressed, Baugh took center stage, dazzling fans with his ability to evade defenders. He scored on runs of 12, 7, and 6 yards, and also recorded the longest run of his career, a 61-yard sprint in the third quarter. His performance was a continuation of his strong finish to the previous season, where he rushed for 266 yards and two touchdowns against Florida State.
Despite the overwhelming loss, FAU's offense, led by quarterback Caden Veltkamp, attempted to keep pace. Veltkamp completed 34 of 52 passes for 276 yards, with one touchdown, two interceptions, and a fumble. His leading receiver, Easton Messer, caught seven passes for 73 yards but struggled to find consistency against Florida's defense.
While Sumrall's debut was impressive, he will likely find areas for improvement. FAU managed to run 57 plays in the first half and converted 10 of their first 16 third-down attempts, indicating that Florida's defense had moments of vulnerability.
Looking ahead, Florida Atlantic will host Navy next Saturday, while Florida will welcome Campbell to The Swamp. The Gators' performance in this game sets a positive tone for the remainder of the season under Sumrall's leadership, as they aim to build on this momentum.
