As the Jacksonville Jaguars gear up for the 2026 NFL season, rookie safety Jalen Huskey is carving out his niche within the team. The former Maryland standout has demonstrated his potential during training camp and the preseason, showcasing the skills that led the Jaguars to select him in the third round of the draft.
Huskey, who stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 201 pounds, has been a standout in practice, despite some typical rookie mistakes. His aggressive play style, particularly in run defense, has caught the attention of coaches and teammates alike. The Jaguars are hoping that Huskey can contribute significantly, especially as veteran safety Eric Murray enters his 11th season and Antonio Johnson is in a contract year.
During the preseason, Huskey recorded two tackles and nearly scored a touchdown in the Jaguars' 19-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on August 28. His performance included seven total tackles, three of which came on special teams, and he also had one pass breakup over three games. The near touchdown came when he scooped up a fumble by Buccaneers quarterback Jalon Daniels, only for the play to be overturned upon review, ruling it an incomplete pass.
Despite the disappointment of not scoring, Huskey reflected positively on the experience, emphasizing the importance of communication as a safety. "A lot more communication is put on your shoulders, especially as a safety," he remarked. His ability to communicate effectively on the field is crucial, as it helps to coordinate the defense and ensure proper coverage against opposing offenses.
Huskey has expressed gratitude for the mentorship he has received from veterans like Murray and Johnson. He appreciates the camaraderie he has developed with fellow safeties Caleb Ransaw and Rayuan Lane III, both of whom have also shown promise during training camp. Ransaw, who missed the entire previous season due to injury, and Lane, a former U.S. Naval Academy player, have provided Huskey with both on-field guidance and off-field friendship.
Special teams play is another area where Huskey aims to make his mark. He has always embraced the opportunity to contribute on special teams, having previously excelled in that role during his college career. "It’s just another chance to get on the field," he stated, highlighting his commitment to earning a spot on the Jaguars' special teams unit. Huskey's enthusiasm for special teams is evident, as he aims to be a four-core contributor, showing up every day with the right mindset and effort.
Defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile has acknowledged Huskey's progress, noting that while he has room for growth, he has been working hard to improve. Campanile stated, "He’s done some good things and he’s working hard to get better. He’s done what we’ve asked of him to this point, so I’m pleased with where he’s at. But obviously, he’s got room to grow, and we’re trying to help him do that."
