HARRISONBURG, Va. — The James Madison Dukes commenced the Billy Napier era with a hard-fought 20-13 victory over in-state rival Liberty on Saturday. Quarterback JC Evans played a pivotal role in the win, throwing for a touchdown and executing a crucial first down late in the fourth quarter to secure the game.
With just over two minutes remaining, James Madison's defense forced Liberty into a critical fourth-and-2 situation. The Dukes successfully broke up a pass attempt, allowing Evans to take charge on the next play. He rushed for 23 yards, allowing the Dukes to run out the clock with three consecutive running plays, much to the delight of the 25,035 fans in attendance.
Evans had an efficient outing, completing 7 of 9 passes for 61 yards while also contributing significantly on the ground with 69 rushing yards on nine carries. His performance included a 5-yard touchdown pass to Corey Scott just before halftime, which helped the Dukes establish a 17-3 lead.
This matchup was particularly competitive, as 11 of the last 20 meetings between James Madison and Liberty have been decided by a single score, highlighting the intensity of this rivalry. The victory also marked an important milestone for the Dukes, who improved their all-time series record against Liberty to 14-6, earning the coveted Battle of the Blue Ridge trophy.
On the other side, Liberty's Deshawn Purdie threw for 230 yards and a touchdown, but the Flames were unable to capitalize on their opportunities in Harrisonburg, marking their first visit to the Dukes' home turf since 2014.
