Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is facing uncertainty regarding his participation in the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka due to an ongoing knee injury. Reports from credible sources, including Cricinfo and The Times of India, indicate that Bumrah has been advised not to rush back into action after suffering an injury to his left knee, which has sidelined him since mid-July.
Bumrah's absence was notably felt during the third ODI against England at Lord's, where he did not take the field. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) attributed his withdrawal to an impact injury sustained while fielding in the second ODI in Cardiff. Currently, he is at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, where medical assessments have revealed that he is still experiencing discomfort in his knee.
In light of this situation, the BCCI medical team has recommended that Bumrah refrain from traveling to Sri Lanka, prioritizing a complete recovery over a rushed return. A source close to the situation emphasized the importance of ensuring that Bumrah is fully fit before rejoining the team, citing past instances where players who returned prematurely faced further setbacks. "There is a lot of cricket left in the year, including the Asian Games, the tour of New Zealand, and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy early next year," the source noted.
The Indian cricket team is scheduled to play a three-day practice match in Colombo starting August 7, with the first Test set to begin on August 15 in Galle, followed by the second Test at the SSC in Colombo on August 23. This series marks India's first engagement in the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle, following a disappointing 2-0 home defeat to South Africa last year.
India's injury woes have compounded in recent weeks, with Bumrah's absence in the third ODI against England contributing to the team's struggles, as they allowed England to post a formidable score of 387-3. Captain Shubman Gill expressed concerns about the impact of injuries on team performance, stating, "It becomes a little difficult when a player has a niggle. You are playing with five bowlers, and if one goes down, it creates a significant challenge for the team."
In addition to Bumrah, India will be without Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy, both of whom are sidelined due to hamstring and quadriceps injuries, respectively. Washington Sundar is also ruled out for the first Test. With Bumrah's unavailability, Auqib Nabi emerges as a leading candidate to replace him in the squad. Nabi, who was part of the training setup during India's one-off Test against Afghanistan and recently toured Sri Lanka with India A, has shown promise with six wickets in two matches.
