In a significant shift for the Buffalo Bills' defense, rookie Javon Solomon is stepping into a new role as a stand-up outside linebacker. Drafted in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Solomon comes with a reputation for his impressive ability to pressure quarterbacks, having led the nation with 16 sacks during his final season at Troy University.
Throughout his college career, Solomon accumulated a total of 33 sacks, ranking second all-time in the Sun Belt Conference. However, he believes his skill set extends beyond just rushing the passer. With the Bills implementing a new defensive scheme, Solomon is eager to demonstrate his versatility and contribute in various ways, including pass coverage.
“I love that versatile aspect in terms of like dropping, rushing, playing the run,” Solomon stated. “This did nothing but boost my self-esteem and internal motivation.” Despite his talent, Solomon faced challenges in his first two seasons with the Bills, where he primarily played as an edge rusher in a 4-2-5 defensive alignment. Over 31 games, he managed only three sacks and 22 pressures, finding it difficult to make an impact against larger offensive linemen.
Now, as he transitions to his new position, Solomon feels that lining up off the ball will better utilize his athleticism. Coach Joe Brady has echoed these sentiments, noting that the new role allows Solomon to leverage his unique skill set effectively. “It’s a lot more natural position for him now,” Brady commented, highlighting Solomon’s ability to rush the quarterback and drop into coverage.
The competition for roster spots among the Bills' outside linebackers has intensified, especially following the signing of veteran Bradley Chubb and the drafting of TJ Parker. With the return of Michael Hoecht from injury and the addition of Mike Danna, Solomon finds himself in a crowded field. However, he views this competition as a positive force, pushing him and his teammates to improve.
“Competition within our room is the best thing about camp,” Solomon said. “We’re always pushing each other to get better.” His commitment to special teams has also been a factor in his favor; Solomon ranked fourth on the team last season with 278 special teams snaps and recorded 10 tackles.
Coach Brady acknowledged Solomon’s value on special teams, stating, “He’s a good special teams player, so there’s so much value in that.” While the Bills' depth chart at outside linebacker appears solid with Rousseau, Chubb, Hoecht, and Parker, Solomon is determined to make the most of any opportunities that come his way.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re first or you’re last; there’s talent everywhere,” Solomon remarked. He is ready to seize any chance to showcase his abilities, whether on defense or special teams.
