Bella Mir's mama is in damage-control mode.
Mir on Tuesday was a historic -6000 betting favorite at DWCS 89 against Alex Apodaca. The fight was considered by most to be a layup for a UFC contract, particularly given her close association in the past four years to UFC CEO Dana White – whose comments about her potential no doubt helped set the betting line.
But Apodaca battered and bloodied her, particularly in the final two rounds, and took a unanimous decision – and the UFC contract that was thought to be just about automatic for Mir.
Mir's father is former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir – but it was her mother, Jennifer, who made headlines in the wake of Bella's loss. She made multiple comments on Apodaca's social media posts – and promptly started to get roasted by other commenters.
Her analysis of Apodaca's upset of her daughter included gems like "You lucked out tonight the judges were OBVIOUSLY in your favor!!!! Celebrate a win that you didn't earn!!!!!" and "I love jet (sic) eye that's popping out from my daughter f*cking you up!!!!! The stars were aligned for you tonight babygirl"
Jennifer Mir long has managed Frank's career and business ventures, and presumably has been in the same role for Bella. Thursday, she posted an apology to Apodaca and others for her helicopter-mom crash-out of post-fight ugly parent syndrome – and she wisely kept the comments turned off on Instagram.
"I want to address the comments I made after the fight. But first I want to give you all a very deserved explanation," Jennifer posted. "After the fight I went onto bella’s comments and saw comments telling my daughter to die and kill herself. I reacted purely as an emotional and protective mother after seeing my daughter go through a hard loss and I let alcohol and adrenaline get the better of me.
"However, that is ZERO excuse. I want to sincerely apologize to Alex Apodaca, her team, the judges, and the fans. Alex fought a brilliant fight and earned that win fair and square and deserves nothing but respect. My out-of-line comments were entirely my own and do not reflect Bella, her team, or the values she trains by. I’m stepping back from social media to let Bella focus on her recovery and I ask everyone to direct any frustration toward me and not my daughter."
