In a compelling display of defensive prowess, Jensen Beach High School secured a decisive 23-3 victory over their crosstown rivals, South Fork, on Friday, September 4, at Joebud Staggs Stadium. The win not only extends Jensen Beach's dominance in this rivalry to nine consecutive games but also reinforces their position as a formidable force in the local high school football scene.
Head coach Tim Caffey expressed pride in his team's performance, emphasizing the importance of preparation and execution. "The kids came to play. They listened. We worked on a lot of different things, and they’re starting to get it. They played hard. Hats off to South Fork. They have a really good team here. We just felt like we had a few areas where we could match them and take advantage of a few things, and we did," Caffey remarked after the game.
Jensen Beach's victory was marked by significant contributions from both the offense and defense. Senior linebacker Alex Thornton capped off the game with a spectacular 77-yard interception return for a touchdown, solidifying the Falcons' lead as the final whistle blew. Thornton's confidence about the rivalry was evident as he boldly stated, "We’re going to keep beating them. They’re never going to win. They’re not going to beat Jensen." This sentiment reflects the competitive spirit that has characterized this matchup since it began in 2017.
The game's scoring opened with a defensive play that saw junior defensive end Jayden Ruzicka tip a screen pass from South Fork quarterback Champ Smith. The ball fell into the hands of Marcus Rogers, who quickly took it into the end zone for a touchdown. Rogers, who is committed to Keiser University, highlighted the teamwork involved in the play, saying, "It was really set up by Jayden Ruzicka. He came off the line screaming, ‘Hands up.’ I saw the ball in the air and said, ‘I’ve got to go get that,’ and the end zone was right there for me."
Jensen Beach continued to build on their lead with a 5-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Dre Lott, following a well-executed seven-play, 58-yard drive. The Falcons further extended their advantage in the third quarter with a 37-yard field goal from Damien Heissenberg. South Fork finally got on the scoreboard with a 33-yard field goal by Andrew Dawson in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late for the Bulldogs.
Despite their struggles, South Fork had opportunities to score, including a potential touchdown pass from Smith to Jarrod Kelly that was nullified by a holding penalty. Following this setback, Smith was intercepted by Jalen Webley in the end zone, further compounding the Bulldogs' frustrations. South Fork head coach Eric Kresser acknowledged the game's competitive nature, stating, "I think if anybody watched this game tonight or watched it on video, they’ll realize that this game was a lot closer than the score indicated. It very easily could have been a one-score game the whole way. But we gave them a couple, and it just didn’t go our way."
As Jensen Beach celebrates this latest victory, the Falcons remain focused on sustaining their success in the upcoming matches. The rivalry with South Fork has proven to be a significant part of their season, and the players are eager to continue their winning tradition. Meanwhile, South Fork will look to regroup and address their shortcomings as they prepare for their next challenge in the season.
