John Harbaugh Prepares for All Scenarios with Malik Nabers Ahead of Season Opener

As the New York Giants gear up for their highly anticipated Week 1 opener against the Dallas Cowboys, head coach John Harbaugh is navigating the uncertain status of wide receiver Malik Nabers. Following a challenging recovery from a torn ACL sustained last season, Nabers participated in most of the team drills during Tuesday's practice after a brief session with the training staff.

Despite Nabers' involvement in practice, Harbaugh remains non-committal about the receiver’s availability for the season opener. "It’s day-to-day. He’s kind of working through what he needs from one day to the next," Harbaugh explained to reporters, emphasizing the cautious approach the team is taking with Nabers' recovery.

When asked if the coaching staff should prepare for the possibility that Nabers might not play against the Cowboys, Harbaugh referenced a cautionary tale from the classic film “The Odd Couple,” highlighting the importance of not making assumptions. Instead, he stated, "We’ve got to plan for every outcome." This means the Giants are preparing for various scenarios regarding Nabers' participation, from being fully available to not playing at all, and everything in between.

Nabers himself has expressed a desire to be on the field for the entire game, aiming to play four quarters while ensuring he is healthy enough to do so. Harbaugh echoed this sentiment, stressing the need for Nabers to not only be physically ready but also confident in his ability to contribute effectively. "Is it going to be where he needs to be to help us win?" Harbaugh questioned, underscoring the dual focus on performance and player safety.

In addition to his health, Harbaugh acknowledged Nabers' potential impact on the field, noting that his ability to attract defensive attention is a significant factor for the Giants' offensive strategy. However, the coach left the door open regarding the possibility of a limited role for Nabers if he returns, indicating that a pitch count could be in play depending on how well Nabers progresses in his recovery.

With only 11 days remaining until the Giants face the Cowboys, the coaching staff is meticulously crafting their game plan to accommodate all potential outcomes regarding Nabers' availability. This strategic flexibility will be crucial as the Giants aim to start the season on a strong note against a division rival.
