John Hunter Nemechek took to social media on Wednesday to address his recent departure from Legacy Motor Club (LMC). Reports emerged on Tuesday from Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic indicating that Nemechek would not be returning to the No. 42 Toyota for the 2027 NASCAR Cup Series season.
Nemechek's journey in the NASCAR Cup Series has seen its share of ups and downs. After stepping away from the Cup Series following the 2020 season, he transitioned to the Craftsman Truck Series and the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. He made his return to the Cup level in 2024, taking the wheel of the No. 42 car. During that season, Nemechek managed to secure four top-10 finishes, ultimately placing 34th in the overall standings.
The following year marked a notable improvement for Nemechek, as he achieved two top-five finishes and eight top-10s, finishing the 2025 season in 25th place. However, as of the conclusion of 26 races in 2026, Nemechek finds himself ranked 27th in the points with one top-five and two top-10 finishes to his name.
In his statement regarding his departure from LMC, Nemechek expressed heartfelt gratitude for the time he spent with the organization. While he acknowledged his disappointment with the team's decision to move in a different direction, he remains focused on finishing the 2026 season on a strong note. Nemechek conveyed optimism about his future in NASCAR, stating, “I am incredibly grateful to Legacy Motor Club for the past three years. While I am obviously disappointed with their decision, I am as motivated as ever. It has been such an honor to represent Toyota, Legacy Motor Club, and all of their sponsors. I can’t wait to continue this journey, as I know my best days are ahead.”
He also took a moment to thank those who have supported him throughout his career, emphasizing the importance of family and friends during challenging times. Nemechek plans to concentrate on the final ten races of the 2026 season, aiming to finish strong and determine his next steps in the sport.
With Nemechek's exit, speculation arises regarding who will take over the No. 42 LMC Toyota in 2027. According to Bianchi's report, Josh Berry is currently viewed as the frontrunner for the position. Berry, who drives the No. 21 Ford for Wood Brothers Racing, is set to be replaced by Jesse Love after the current season concludes.
Berry has been on a remarkable performance streak, achieving five consecutive top-10 finishes, including two in the top five. Notably, he averaged a sixth-place finish during the month of August, the best among all drivers in the NASCAR Cup Series. As the 2026 season progresses, all eyes will be on Berry and the potential transition to the No. 42 car.
