At the British Grand Prix held at Silverstone, Jorge Martin showcased his racing prowess by leading from start to finish in the sprint race on Saturday. This victory not only marked a significant achievement for the Spaniard but also extended his lead in the MotoGP championship standings, solidifying his position as a top contender this season.
Starting from pole position, Martin executed a flawless race over the 10-lap sprint, finishing ahead of Ai Ogura, who claimed second place, and his teammate Marco Bezzecchi, who completed an all-Aprilia podium by finishing third. This dominant performance by the Italian manufacturer highlights their strong presence in the current MotoGP season.
With this win, Martin has amassed a total of 220 points, creating a 17-point buffer over Ogura, who now sits in second place. Meanwhile, Bezzecchi's impressive performance allowed him to leapfrog Marc Marquez, moving into third place in the championship standings, 27 points behind Martin. Marquez, a previous title contender, faced significant challenges during the race, finishing ninth after starting from sixth on the grid, primarily due to tyre wear issues.
“A lot of work during summer, finally, all the work we did was worth it. So I’m really, really happy. Today, what can I say? Incredible job,” Martin expressed after his victory. His ability to convert pole position into a win was crucial, but he also had to manage his tyre resources carefully, especially as degradation became a prominent factor in the latter stages of the race.
Despite his lead, Martin noted the challenges he faced with tyre grip, stating, “I tried to be as fast as possible, trying to manage. At the end, I had no rear tyre (grip). So I thought Ai would catch me, but I was able to manage the distance and another sprint victory is always amazing.” His strategic approach to managing tyre wear proved vital in securing the win.
Historically, Ducati riders have dominated sprints at Silverstone, winning the last three. However, during this event, the best result for Ducati came from Gresini Racing’s Alex Marquez, who finished fourth, while VR46 Racing’s Fabio Di Giannantonio rounded out the top five.
The race was not without its drama, particularly for Marquez, who made contact with Bezzecchi early on but managed to recover to fourth place temporarily. However, the superior cornering speed of the Aprilias soon became evident, with Bezzecchi passing Marquez on lap five and pulling away.
As Marquez struggled with grip, he lost positions to his brother Alex, as well as KTM's Pedro Acosta, Joan Mir, and Franco Morbidelli, ultimately finishing in ninth place. Upon returning to the pits, Ducati mechanics promptly examined his rear tyre, indicating the extent of his struggles during the race.
While Martin celebrated his victory, Bezzecchi's emotional return to the podium after collarbone surgery added a poignant touch to the day. He expressed gratitude to his team for their support during his recovery, stating, “It was a tough period, as you probably can imagine. So it was very important to come back and enjoy on the bike. We did a very good job.” His tears of joy reflected the hard work and determination that went into his comeback.
As the MotoGP season progresses, Martin's victory at the British Grand Prix sprint not only boosts his championship lead but also sets the stage for an exciting race on Sunday, where he will look to continue his strong performance.
