Jorge Masvidal, a prominent figure in mixed martial arts, recently shared his heartfelt appreciation for the late Kimbo Slice, revealing how Slice played a pivotal role in the early stages of his fighting career. In a conversation with fellow fighter Daniel Cormier, Masvidal recounted the unique connection they shared that ultimately led him to compete on Slice's underground fighting platform.

Both Masvidal and Slice hailed from nearby neighborhoods in Miami and had mutual friends, which brought them together at the Freestyle Fighting Academy. At that time, Masvidal was already dedicated to pursuing a career in mixed martial arts, having accumulated experience through amateur fights and grappling competitions.

Masvidal reminisced about a significant moment when one of the gym's owners recognized his potential and encouraged Slice to watch him spar. Slice, who had gained notoriety for his backyard fights that were captivating audiences online, took the opportunity to help Masvidal. "One of the gym owners asked him, goes, ‘Man, I got a really talented dude. I want you to watch him spar and see if you’ll put him on,’" Masvidal recalled, expressing gratitude for the chance Slice provided him.

Due to the illicit nature of these underground fights, the events were often shrouded in secrecy, with organizers facing fines and potential arrests. Masvidal described the adrenaline rush of receiving just two hours' notice before his first fight, which took place in Liberty City, Miami, behind a laundromat. It was a gritty setting that epitomized the underground fight scene of the time.

Before stepping into the ring, Slice offered Masvidal crucial advice regarding his opponent. "He comes back about 20 seconds later and he goes, ‘Keep your left hand up. He’s got a really, really good right,’" Masvidal recounted. This guidance proved invaluable as he prepared to face his opponent in a high-stakes environment.

Masvidal's journey from those underground fights to becoming a title challenger in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a testament to his resilience and skill. The influence of Kimbo Slice, who tragically passed away in 2016, remains a significant part of Masvidal's narrative as he continues to make his mark in the sport. The legacy of Slice, known for his raw fighting talent and charismatic personality, lives on through fighters like Masvidal who were inspired by his journey.

As Masvidal continues to compete at the highest levels of mixed martial arts, he often reflects on the early days that shaped his career. The bond he shared with Slice not only helped launch his career but also highlights the interconnected nature of the fighting community, where mentorship and support can lead to remarkable opportunities.
