As the 2026 NFL season approaches, Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs is poised for a significant year, entering the final season of his rookie contract. Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com noted that when healthy, Downs has the capability to be among the league's elite slot receivers. This recognition comes as no surprise, given his performance since being drafted by the Colts as the 79th overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Over the course of his first three seasons, the 25-year-old Downs has established himself as a reliable target for Indianapolis. He has recorded a total of 198 receptions, amassing 2,140 receiving yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. His breakout season occurred in 2024, where he achieved career highs with 72 catches for 803 yards and five touchdowns.
However, Downs faced a decline in production last season, finishing with 58 receptions for 566 yards and four touchdowns. This drop can be attributed to a shift in the Colts' offensive strategy, which saw the team utilizing more multi-tight end formations. The addition of tight end Tyler Warren also limited Downs' opportunities in the passing game. Despite this, the Colts have signaled their intention to increase Downs' role in the upcoming season, suggesting that he may return to form.
In addition to Downs, the Colts had another player featured in Rosenthal’s rankings. Quenton Nelson, a seven-time first-team All-Pro guard, was ranked eighth, underscoring the talent present within the Indianapolis roster. With two players making the top 25 list, the Colts are well-represented among potential free agents for 2027.
