WEST LAFAYETTE — Jude McCoskey's decision to join Purdue football from the transfer portal in April 2025 marked a significant turning point in his athletic career. The Terre Haute native, who previously spent two seasons as a starter at Indiana State, was eager to fulfill his dream of playing in the Big Ten, just a short drive from home. However, McCoskey later revealed that he entered this new chapter with his confidence at a low point.
Reflecting on his mental state during that time, McCoskey noted, "In the Bible, it says do not listen to the strangers’ voice – and I was listening to that strangers’ voice. I let some evil stuff get to me and put myself in a bad confidence spot." Despite the challenges he faced, McCoskey has turned things around and is now poised to make a significant impact on the field.
As the Boilermakers prepare for their season opener, McCoskey's confidence is at an all-time high. Just two years ago, he was on the opposing side, starting for Indiana State during their 49-0 loss to Purdue. This Friday, he will take the field as a starting right tackle and team captain for the Boilermakers, a role that speaks volumes about his growth and development.
Last season, McCoskey served as the backup right tackle and contributed as the sixth offensive lineman in special formations. This year, he is expected to be a key player in the offensive line, which will be critical for the team's success. His experience and leadership will be invaluable, especially with three new players expected to fill the interior positions, including first-year Brock Brownfield at left guard.
McCoskey expressed that being named captain is a source of pressure, but he views it positively. "It’s a good pressure," he stated, emphasizing the importance of his veteran presence as the team navigates the challenges of the season. Stability and productivity from the offensive line will be crucial for the Boilermakers as they aim to elevate their performance this year.
First-year offensive line coach Zach Crabtree praised McCoskey's dedication to improving his game. "Jude’s done an unbelievable job developing and attacking," Crabtree said. He highlighted McCoskey's commitment to refining his technique and his proactive approach to seeking guidance throughout the offseason.
McCoskey's journey to Purdue was not without its hurdles. Despite a successful high school career, he was not initially seen as a power conference prospect. He proved his capabilities at Indiana State, starting nine of 11 games as a freshman and all 11 as a sophomore, showcasing his versatility on the field.
After entering the transfer portal in December 2024, McCoskey briefly committed to Tulane but quickly realized he wanted to return closer to home. With Purdue's coaching staff under Barry Odom now in place, McCoskey found a welcoming opportunity to join the Boilermakers. Last season, he participated in 89 snaps, including 33 on the offensive line, and now steps into a starting role following the departure of Bakyne Coly.
In an interesting twist, McCoskey's first game as a Boilermaker will be against his former team, Indiana State. He will face off against fellow Terre Haute South graduate Alex Rose, who has become a close friend. McCoskey's familiarity with the Sycamores, combined with his past experiences, gives him a unique perspective as he prepares for the matchup.
As he gears up for the season, McCoskey is focused on showcasing his skills and proving that he belongs in the Big Ten. He encourages his teammates to embrace the moment and put their best foot forward. "Go have fun. Go put yourself out there," he advised. "Go put film out there so the world can see you’re not to be messed with, either."
