Kayshon Boutte, the wide receiver recently traded from the New England Patriots to the Houston Texans, addressed the media for the first time since the move, providing insights into his transition and the circumstances surrounding his departure from New England.
During his press conference, which took place a week after the trade, Boutte shared his initial impressions of the Texans while also reflecting on his three seasons with the Patriots. He had requested a trade earlier in the offseason, and he articulated the motivations behind his decision.
"They did pay two guys to come in and do that job. Sadly, it is the way it is," Boutte explained, referring to the Patriots' recent acquisitions of wide receivers Romeo Doubs and A.J. Brown. Doubs joined the team on a lucrative four-year deal worth $68 million, while Brown was brought in through a trade that cost the Patriots a first- and fifth-round draft pick. These moves significantly altered the dynamics within New England’s receiving corps.
In the 2024 season, Boutte had shown promise as a part-time starter, accumulating 42 receptions for 719 yards and seven touchdowns. However, with the arrival of Doubs and Brown, he found himself relegated to the role of the fourth wide receiver during training camp, trailing behind both newcomers and slot receiver DeMario Douglas.
Head coach Mike Vrabel's comments following the Patriots' preseason finale further complicated Boutte's situation. He suggested that Boutte "probably would have been inactive" on game days this season, a statement that might have seemed harsh but did not seem to faze the young receiver. Boutte responded thoughtfully, indicating that he did not view Vrabel’s remarks as a source of motivation.
"I feel like what Vrabes said in his media interview, it wasn’t anything bad," Boutte noted. "I wouldn’t say I’ll use that as fuel. At the end of the day, he said that. It was an honest opinion. He said that, he spoke his truth, and pretty much move forward from it." This perspective highlights Boutte's maturity and readiness to embrace his new opportunity with the Texans.
As Boutte embarks on this new chapter in Houston, his focus will likely be on establishing himself within the Texans' offense and contributing significantly as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Texans, who are looking to improve their standing in the league, will be counting on Boutte's talents to enhance their receiving options.
