In an exciting announcement, the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau revealed that Owensboro will once again host the Kentucky All 'A' Classic during the current school year. This event is set to bring a series of state championships to the city, attracting thousands of student-athletes, coaches, families, and fans.
Lucas Daunhauer, the sports destination development director for the Convention & Visitors Bureau, highlighted the significance of the Kentucky All 'A' Classic, stating that it provides championship opportunities for smaller high schools throughout Kentucky. Specifically, the event caters to schools with enrollments of 575 or fewer students in grades 9-12, with 142 teams currently participating.
The tournament schedule kicks off with volleyball competitions at the Owensboro Convention Center on September 18-19. Following that, the boys and girls state basketball championships will take place at the Sportscenter from January 20-24. The baseball tournament is set for April 24-25 at Daviess County High School, while the state softball tournament will occur simultaneously at Jack C. Fisher Park.
Adding to the excitement, the inaugural Kentucky All 'A' tennis championships will be hosted in Owensboro on April 30-May 1. This new event will feature a robust lineup, including 32 boys singles players, 32 boys doubles pairings, 32 girls singles players, and 32 girls doubles pairings, allowing up to 128 individuals and teams from Kentucky's smallest schools to compete in a state tournament.
Daunhauer credited Noel Clayton of the Owensboro-Daviess County Tennis Association for his instrumental role in developing the tennis championship, which includes determining its format and ensuring the inaugural event's success. The partnership with Owensboro Health has also enhanced the championship experience, with the organization providing athletic trainers for events held in Owensboro and advocating for high school athletics.
Moreover, the state tournaments offer students a chance to become familiar with local institutions such as Kentucky Wesleyan College and Brescia University, potentially influencing their future educational paths.
Founded in 1980, the Kentucky All 'A' Classic began as a small-school basketball tournament, starting with just eight teams at Holy Cross High School in Latonia. Over the years, it has expanded to include state championships in various sports, including archery, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, golf, soccer, softball, volleyball, and now tennis. The tournaments relocated to Owensboro last year, marking a new chapter in the event's history.
