The school is set to host a rivalry matchup against Montgomery County, originally scheduled for 7:30 p.m., but the oppressive heat could lead to a delay in kickoff.
George Rogers Clark Athletic Director Terry Yeast has indicated that school officials across Central Kentucky are in discussions regarding the extreme weather conditions. Yeast likened the situation to a 'snow day,' emphasizing the collaborative efforts among schools to ensure player safety and well-being.
To assess the heat's impact, athletic trainers utilize a wet bulb globe thermometer, which measures humidity and temperature to determine the risk of heat-related illnesses. If the thermometer reads 92.1 degrees or higher, outdoor activities, including practices and games, may be postponed or canceled until conditions improve.
This week, George Rogers Clark has already felt the effects of the heat on their practice schedule. Yeast noted that on Tuesday, the team was limited to practicing in T-shirts and shorts, which hindered their preparation for the upcoming game. 'It’s not ideal for the football team to miss out on contact and focus on their strategies,' he stated.
While Yeast believes that a cancellation of Friday's game is unlikely, he acknowledged that the decision involves more than just ensuring player safety. Financial implications also play a significant role, as last-minute cancellations can strain budgets. 'I prefer to make a decision a couple of hours in advance to avoid unnecessary expenses, especially when funds can be tight,' he explained.
If the game proceeds as planned, George Rogers Clark will implement additional measures to help players, coaches, and staff cope with the heat. Plans include utilizing fans on the field, providing ice buckets for players, and ensuring that athletes stay well-hydrated in the lead-up to the game.
As of now, the game is still slated to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Clark County. However, the heat has already caused changes to at least two other games scheduled for Friday night. Madison Southern's game against Madison Central and East Jessamine's matchup with Dunbar have both been pushed back to an 8 p.m. start time, allowing for cooler conditions before players take the field.
