This Friday night, the Kickapoo Chiefs will take on the Republic Tigers in what promises to be an exciting high school football game at Tiger Stadium in Springfield. For Kickapoo Head Coach Bill Voorhis, this matchup holds special significance as it marks his return to the field where he once played for the Tigers over two decades ago.
"I haven’t been to a Republic football game in probably 23 years," Voorhis reflected. "The last time would’ve been Districts, my senior year, in 2003, so it’s been a while. I’m looking forward to it; it’ll be a special moment for me and my wife, as she’s from Republic, as well." This emotional homecoming, however, will quickly give way to the competitive spirit as the Chiefs aim to secure a victory against a formidable Tigers team.
The Republic Tigers, under the leadership of Head Coach Ryan Cornelsen, have started their season strong, dominating Lebanon with a decisive 35-0 victory in their opening game. Coach Voorhis acknowledged the challenge that lies ahead, stating, "I mean, obviously, Coach Cornelsen, his record speaks for itself. I’m just trying to focus on us, you know? You’re not gonna outcoach a guy like that. He’s seen everything; he knows an adjustment for everything."
Kickapoo, on the other hand, is looking to bounce back after a narrow loss to Joplin, where they fell 14-10. This result, while disappointing, represents a significant improvement from last year's encounter, where the Eagles overwhelmed the Chiefs 35-7. Voorhis noted, "I felt like we made a huge jump both in toughness and execution, and the most important thing to me is that the kids cared. After the game, I could tell they were disappointed that they didn’t win."
As the Chiefs prepare for their matchup, they will need to keep a close eye on Republic's standout player, senior Keiran Govan, who has committed to play for the Missouri Tigers. Govan has already made a name for himself, having played a crucial role in the Tigers' run to the Class 5 state championship game in 2023. Coach Cornelsen mentioned, "We didn’t play him the whole game last week; we didn’t feel like we needed to. Hopefully, each game he’s playing a little bit longer on both sides because down the stretch we’ll need him to be a dynamic player on both sides, not just one."
Govan himself is focused on the present, saying, "I’m not worried about what’s going on at Mizzou right now because I’m not even there yet. I’ll be worried about that when I get there in January, so that’s really what I gotta do. I gotta stay mentally locked in for what we need." This dedication exemplifies the mentality that both teams will need as they strive for success in this competitive matchup.
As the Kickapoo Chiefs and Republic Tigers prepare to clash, fans can expect a thrilling contest filled with nostalgia, talent, and the spirit of high school football. The outcome of this game could set the tone for the rest of the season for both teams, making it a must-watch for local sports enthusiasts.
