The Los Angeles Rams have officially released cornerback Zech McPhearson, concluding a brief tenure with the team that lasted less than a month. The decision was made on September 5, 2026, when the Rams terminated McPhearson's contract through an injury settlement, as reported by Blaine Grisak of Sports Illustrated.
McPhearson joined the Rams on August 9, 2026, but his hopes for a roster spot were hindered by an undisclosed injury that led to his placement on injured reserve just two weeks later, on August 24. This injury not only jeopardized his season but also ultimately resulted in his release, as it was noted that he would miss the entire 2026 season unless an injury settlement was reached.
The 28-year-old cornerback was initially drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the fourth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, being selected 123rd overall out of Texas Tech. During his first two seasons in the league, McPhearson played in 33 regular-season games, showcasing his skills primarily on special teams. In 2022, he participated in all 17 games, accumulating 278 defensive snaps and 687 special teams snaps, along with one sack, 14 combined tackles, and one pass breakup.
His signing with the Rams was seen as a potential boost for the team's special teams unit, which had struggled during the previous season. McPhearson's experience in this area made him an appealing option for Los Angeles, especially as they sought to enhance their depth in the defensive backfield.
Prior to his time with the Rams, McPhearson's career faced significant challenges, including a torn Achilles that sidelined him for the entire 2023 season. After being waived by the Eagles during their final roster cuts in 2024, he spent time on the practice squad of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Although he was brought back on a reserve/futures deal, another injury in August 2025 resulted in him being placed on injured reserve and subsequently released with an injury settlement.
McPhearson's brief stint with the Rams came to an end just as the team was finalizing its roster for the upcoming season. The Rams had been actively reshaping their cornerback group throughout August, and McPhearson's injury led them to seek additional depth in the secondary. His release allows him the opportunity to recover and potentially pursue another chance in the NFL once he is fit to play.
As the Rams prepare for the start of the regular season, they will move forward without McPhearson, who was unable to make an impact in the lineup. The team’s focus now shifts entirely to the upcoming games, while McPhearson faces the task of rehabilitation and finding a way to reignite his professional career in the future.
