LAFAYETTE — In a highly anticipated Week 3 county rivalry clash, Lafayette Jeff faced off against McCutcheon on Friday, September 4. The game, held at Ellison Stadium, featured a defensive battle that kept fans on the edge of their seats for the majority of the contest.
Despite the final score of 28-7 in favor of the Bronchos, the game was tightly contested, with Jeff leading by a mere 11-7 at the end of the third quarter. Both teams displayed tenacious defensive strategies, making it difficult for either offense to find a rhythm. McCutcheon’s head coach, Michael Fenters, aptly described his team’s performance as “old school,” highlighting their commitment to hard-hitting defense.
Just before halftime, McCutcheon senior Brodyn Sharp provided a spark for the Mavericks by intercepting a pass thrown by Jeff quarterback Trysten Barrett. This critical turnover allowed McCutcheon to capitalize, as quarterback Karson Smith connected with receiver Cason Trader for a 10-yard touchdown, narrowing the score and energizing the Mavericks.
“When our drives stalled out, you know, tip your cap to them,” said Jeff coach Pat Shanley, acknowledging the effectiveness of the McCutcheon defense. “They got a good scheme.”
However, the tide turned in the fourth quarter as Lafayette Jeff found the offensive momentum it had been missing. Na’Darius Young, who had an impressive game with seven receptions for 90 yards, made a spectacular catch from Barrett and sprinted 52 yards into the end zone, extending Jeff’s lead to 21-7 with just 5:43 left on the clock.
Following a strong defensive stand that halted McCutcheon’s next drive, Jeff running back Daelyn Neely added to the score with his second touchdown of the night, this time on a 9-yard run. Neely finished the game with 72 rushing yards on 14 carries, while his teammate Darrontae Harris contributed significantly with 153 yards on just 15 carries, forming a formidable rushing duo.
“It was really just reading the defense,” Neely explained regarding his success during the game. “I feel like the alignment was there; it just really took a lot of mental reps.”
Coach Shanley likened the combination of Neely and Harris to “thunder and lightning,” while Neely humorously referred to them as “Knuckles and Sonic,” indicating their complementary playing styles.
In a display of defensive prowess, Lafayette Jeff’s Keshaun Burns intercepted a pass, further solidifying the Bronchos' control in the closing moments of the game. This performance marked the lowest number of points allowed by Jeff since their 57-0 victory over Kokomo on November 7 of the previous year.
“They were lights out,” Shanley remarked about his defense. “I know our first two weeks, from a score standpoint, don’t reflect it, but I really like how we’re operating. I like our DNA.”
In a surprising twist, Shanley credited the special teams for their pivotal role in the victory. Punter Bobby Hoffman consistently provided excellent field position with his powerful kicks, making it challenging for the Mavericks to advance. Kicker Robert Hoffman, who is ranked second in the state, successfully converted field goals from 18 and 36 yards.
First-year long snapper Owen Haverkamp also played a crucial role, ensuring quick operations during special teams plays. Shanley emphasized the importance of their contributions, stating, “Not a lot of plays, but a whole lot of impact.”
After two tough losses to start the season, Lafayette Jeff’s victory against McCutcheon, now 1-2, serves as a potential turning point. Neely, however, expressed that the team is still striving for improvement, stating, “It’s not really a confidence booster, because we didn’t play up to our expectations.”
As the Bronchos look to build on this win, Neely remains focused on leadership and improvement, determined to guide his teammates to greater heights.
