The Laguna Seca circuit has made a heartfelt tribute to racing icon Alessandro Zanardi by renaming its legendary Corkscrew corner to ‘Zanardi Corkscrew’. This significant announcement was made during the opening of the final IndyCar round of the 2026 season, an event attended by notable figures such as Chip Ganassi, Max Papis, and Doug Boles, among others.
The Corkscrew is renowned for its challenging elevation change and has been the site of many memorable moments in motorsport history. One of the most celebrated incidents occurred in 1996 when Zanardi executed a breathtaking pass on race leader Bryan Herta at this very corner during the CART series finale. This daring maneuver not only secured him victory in that race but also became a defining moment in his rookie season.
At the top of the Corkscrew, Zanardi made a bold move on the inside, even briefly losing traction and veering onto the gravel. However, his exceptional skill allowed him to regain control and maintain the lead until he crossed the finish line. He stole my heart, and he stole a lot of people’s hearts that day.”
