In a thrilling showdown for the District 13-5A championship, the Legacy High volleyball team emerged victorious over John Carroll Catholic in a four-set match held at Howard Avril Court. The final scores were 25-18, 23-25, 25-13, and 25-14, showcasing Legacy's dominance, especially in the latter two sets.
This matchup was particularly significant as it marked the only meeting between the two teams this season due to their separation into different districts. The Lions, having previously defeated the Rams on their home court, repeated their success, demonstrating their growth and resilience throughout the match.
Legacy's head coach, Christy Quigley, expressed pride in her team's response after dropping the second set. "I think we maybe lost sight of the little things in the second set. They won some 50-50 balls, and I think a lot of things didn’t go our way, but what I was proud of was the way these girls responded. They didn’t let the previous set bother them, and they came out and just played their game," Quigley stated.
After narrowly losing the second set, Legacy showcased their full potential, particularly through their serving and blocking. The Lions recorded eight service aces, with Lyla Barker-Bray contributing three of those. Defensively, they were a force at the net, achieving a total of 16 blocks, led by senior middle blocker Bailey Johanson, who had an impressive 10 blocks, including four solo efforts.
Legacy's ability to create separation in the match was highlighted by significant scoring runs, including a 10-0 streak in the third set and an 8-1 surge in the fourth. The match concluded with a decisive 5-0 run, capped off by Johanson, who delivered three consecutive kills to secure the win.
Both Johanson and senior outside hitter Taylor Smith led the team with 13 kills each, while Smith also excelled defensively with a team-high 14 digs. Senior setter Meredith Prince contributed significantly with 39 assists, just one shy of her season best. With this victory, Legacy improved to an undefeated 5-0, joining Vero Beach as the only other unbeaten team in the Treasure Coast area, while John Carroll fell to 5-1, suffering their first loss of the season.
John Carroll's coach, Dustin Wood, reflected on the match, acknowledging the challenges his team faced. "Give them credit, they exposed some things, but I don’t think we played well at times. They were just a little more consistent, and our youth showed. We had three or four sophomores out there at a time, so our inexperience got us a little bit tonight," he said.
Looking ahead, both teams have aspirations for the remainder of the season. Legacy, which made history last year by winning the school’s first district championship and advancing to the regional finals, aims to build on that success. With many key players returning, including captains Johanson, Prince, and Smith, the Lions are focused on making a deeper run in the state tournament.
"I feel like not a lot of teams have the chemistry that we do," Johanson noted. "Knowing that you’re able to trust the person next to you to do their job, while you’re doing yours, definitely builds a strong connection and helps us win a lot of games that can be really difficult."
Meanwhile, John Carroll is under new leadership with coach Dustin Wood, who is optimistic about the team's potential as the season progresses. He emphasized the importance of building relationships and developing players, stating, "We’re not near where we’re going to be at the end of the year. This loss is just a blemish, but we’re good." As both teams continue their seasons, the lessons learned from this match will undoubtedly play a crucial role in their respective journeys.
