The Section 9 cross country season kicked off with the highly anticipated Wave Mania event, held on September 5 at Sanfordville Elementary. This annual competition, a staple of the Labor Day weekend, saw numerous teams competing for early season bragging rights.
The Warwick boys team dominated the Boys Varsity I race, claiming the title with a strong performance led by junior Leo Shostal. Shostal showcased his exceptional talent by finishing the 3.09-mile race in an impressive time of 16 minutes, 35.3 seconds. His victory was particularly notable as he finished nearly 29 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Jackson St. Lawrence from Goshen, who clocked in at 16:04. Shaun Brenner, also from Goshen, took third place with a time of 16:17. Rounding out the top four was Beacon’s Travis Dickston, who finished in 16:51, marking a clean sweep for Section 9 runners in the top four spots.
In the Boys Varsity II race, Manhasset emerged victorious, significantly outpacing their competitors including Mount Academy, John Jay-East Fishkill, and Monroe-Woodbury. New Rochelle's Jonas Krasner led the charge, winning the race with a time of 16:49.6, just five seconds ahead of Erik Escarcega Tellez from Monroe.
The girls' competitions were equally thrilling. Scarsdale's Adriana Pettinelli claimed victory in the Girls Varsity I race, finishing with a time of 18:11, which was a substantial 54 seconds ahead of Monroe's Olivia Heim, who came in at 19:05. Kingston's Charlotte McFarland and Maeve Paul finished third and fourth, respectively, helping their team secure the overall team title with a score of 53 points, defeating Monroe-Woodbury, which scored 67.
In the Girls Varsity II race, Comsewogue's Lexie Cole took first place, finishing in 18:33, a significant lead over Sparta's Celia Rossettini, who finished at 19:20. Northern Valley-Old Tappan clinched the team title in this category, while Warwick finished in fifth place.
The results from this opening meet set the tone for what promises to be an exciting cross country season in Section 9. With strong performances from both Warwick and other local teams, the competition is expected to intensify as runners prepare for upcoming meets.
