In an electrifying matchup on Friday, September 4, the Liberty Lions showcased their determination and skill by overcoming a challenging start against the Corner Canyon Chargers. The game, held in Peoria, Arizona, saw Liberty rally from behind to secure a convincing 38-14 victory, marking a significant turnaround from their previous encounter with Corner Canyon in 2025.
Early in the game, Corner Canyon (3-1) appeared poised to repeat their success from last season, where they handed Liberty (2-0) a decisive 45-14 defeat. The Chargers took control of the game, leading 14-6 at one point, thanks to quarterback Jaxon Pehrson's effective passing. Pehrson connected with Diesel Dort for a 5-yard touchdown in the second quarter and later found Beckam Coon for a 15-yard score, giving Corner Canyon their largest lead of the night.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second half. Liberty's sophomore quarterback, Jason Haines, ignited his team with a pivotal touchdown pass at 7:08 in the third quarter, initiating a remarkable run of 24 unanswered points. This comeback was sparked by a fumble from Liberty that Corner Canyon's Ryce Palepoi capitalized on, scoring a touchdown to extend the Chargers' lead to 24-14. Yet, this would be the last time Corner Canyon found the end zone.
Haines, who played a crucial role in Liberty's resurgence, quickly responded to the setback by leading his team on a scoring drive that culminated in a 31-yard touchdown pass to senior Carter Rothe, narrowing the gap to 24-21. Haines's performance was nothing short of stellar; he was responsible for four of Liberty's touchdowns, including a rushing score that extended their lead to 31-24 late in the game.
Liberty's head coach, Colin Thomas, praised Haines's resilience and the overall team effort, emphasizing their ability to adapt under pressure. "This game was hard. They do a lot defensively and bring a lot of pressure. So, we knew that was going to be a challenge…but he (Haines) did a good job fighting and clawing, and then guys made plays around him. We ran the ball really well tonight, too," Thomas remarked.
As the game progressed, Liberty's defense tightened, preventing Corner Canyon from mounting any further threats. The Lions' ability to regroup and execute effectively in high-pressure situations demonstrated their growth as a team. Haines expressed pride in his team's performance, stating, "It just shows that we’re a really tough team to beat. Every week we’re just going to keep getting better - starting tomorrow."
With this victory, Liberty not only avenged their previous loss to Corner Canyon but also solidified their status as a formidable contender this season. The Lions will look to build on this momentum as they prepare to face Gilbert Highland in their next matchup on Friday, September 11.
