In a strategic roster move, the Los Angeles Dodgers activated pitcher Bobby Miller from the 60-day injured list on Saturday, while optioning Kyle Hurt to Triple-A Oklahoma City. This adjustment comes as the team navigates the final weeks of the regular season, emphasizing the importance of effective roster management.

The Dodgers are in need of fresh arms as they prepare for a crucial stretch of games, including matchups against the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds. With Eric Lauer recently placed on the injured list following his start last Tuesday, the team is looking to bolster its bullpen. Manager Dave Roberts indicated that Miller could be available for Sunday’s game, potentially pitching up to 50 pitches, depending on his workload.

Miller's return is significant as he began the season on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation and later dealt with a back injury. During his rehab stint with Triple-A Oklahoma City, he posted a 3.86 ERA over seven appearances, striking out 17 batters while walking four in 14 innings. His ability to pitch multiple innings during his rehab has been noted, with his last two outings consisting of one inning each, while earlier appearances ranged from two to three innings.

"I feel like my stuff has played up a little bit better [in relief], but being in attack mode just all the time is really a mindset out there," Miller remarked. He emphasized the importance of getting ahead of hitters and minimizing deep counts, which can be crucial in high-pressure situations.

The decision to activate Miller raises questions regarding the effectiveness of the move compared to retaining Hurt. Some within the Dodgers' clubhouse expressed surprise at Hurt's optioning, indicating that he may have had supporters among teammates. However, Miller's potential to provide length in games makes him a valuable asset as the Dodgers approach the postseason.

As part of their ongoing roster adjustments, the Dodgers are also expected to call up another pitcher to start against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, with Emmet Sheehan being a leading candidate for that role. This move is part of a broader strategy to ensure the pitching staff is well-prepared for the final stretch of the season.

Miller's rehabilitation process began on August 5, marking his 30th day on rehab on Thursday, which is the maximum allowed for pitchers on the injured list. The Dodgers had to activate him by this deadline, or risk losing him to the minors. This decision reflects the team's careful planning, as they aim to maintain Miller's eligibility for future seasons without exhausting his options.

In a related move, the Dodgers designated center fielder Alek Thomas for assignment to make room for Miller on the 40-man roster. This decision underscores the team's shift in focus towards utilizing players who can contribute immediately, particularly as they await the return of Andy Pages from a broken hand. Thomas's designation comes just days after he was optioned to the minors, highlighting the challenges teams face in managing player options and roster flexibility.

While this move may temporarily impact the Dodgers' depth in center field, it reflects a proactive approach as they prepare for the postseason. With the regular season concluding on September 27, the Dodgers are making calculated decisions to position themselves for a successful playoff run.
