Louisville safety D'Angelo Hutchinson had earned a fifth year of college football eligibility first through the NCAA's new 5-for-5 rule. When it was stymied by the Tenth Circuit granting the NCAA's stay request, a Jefferson County Circuit Court judge granted Hutchinson and 12 other players a temporary restraining order that allowed them to play.
Now, another twist.
After spending his entire college career at Louisville, Hutchinson has entered the transfer portal, according to a report from On3. A starter for Louisville in 2025, the safety had announced his plan to return to the Cardinals' squad six days ago and was expected to begin practicing this week. But he'll look elsewhere with the college football season starting in a few days.
During his time at Louisville, Hutchinson totaled 147 tackles, 4 1/2 for loss, and one interception over 46 games played. Prior to his announced return, the Cardinals had found two players to replace Hutchinson and Jojo Evans at the safety spot in projected starters Koen Entringer and Kaleb Beasley, transfers from Iowa and Tennessee, respectively. Hutchinson would have only had one week of fall camp to acclimate back to the team before beginning game week preparations.
Louisville is set to kick off the 2026 season against Ole Miss on Sept. 6 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
