Tuesday proved to be a challenging day for the Miami Marlins minor league affiliates, as each of their teams suffered defeats in their respective matchups. This disappointing outcome highlights the struggles faced by the organization at various levels of their minor league system.
In Triple-A action, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp were overwhelmed by the Norfolk Tides, losing decisively with a score of 9-3 in the opening game of their series. Deyvison De Los Santos stood out for the Jumbo Shrimp, hitting two home runs, which brought his season total to 21 homers along with 70 RBIs. Meanwhile, Matthew Etzel, who recently earned the title of International League Player of the Week, continued his impressive performance by extending his on-base streak to 12 games after hitting his 18th double of the season. However, the game was marred for Jacksonville as right-handed pitcher Brandon White was charged with the loss, allowing six earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out eight in 5.1 innings.
At the Double-A level, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos faced a narrow defeat against the Columbus Clingstones, falling 3-2 in their series opener. Despite the loss, the Blue Wahoos (37-20) saw their magic number to clinch the Second Half Southern League South Division title drop to five, maintaining a 6.5-game lead over the Clingstones with just 11 games remaining in the season. Ethan O’Donnell contributed a solo home run in the second inning, marking the extension of his on-base streak to 21 games. Additionally, Marlins’ No. 22 prospect Adrian Santana had a notable performance, recording two hits including an RBI double in the eighth inning. Santana has been impressive since joining Double-A, boasting a batting average of .318 over his first 21 games after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Beloit Sky Carp, competing at the High-A level, also faced disappointment, losing to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers by a score of 4-2. The Sky Carp (36-25) are now in a race against time to overcome a three-game deficit and secure the top spot in the Midwest League South second-half standings. Pitcher Liomar Martinez delivered a strong performance, allowing only two runs on two hits while striking out seven over seven innings. Offensively, Chase Jaworsky and Brian Sanchez each contributed solo home runs to the Sky Carp’s efforts.
In Single-A, the Jupiter Hammerheads fell short in a nail-biting game against the St. Lucie Mets, losing 7-6. Despite a commendable pitching effort from left-handed pitcher Dameivi Tineo, who struck out 10 batters while allowing three runs (two earned) over five innings, the Hammerheads could not secure the win. Echedry Vargas made a mark with a two-run homer in the eighth inning, leading the team with 26 homers and 88 RBIs this season. Additionally, Wessley Roberson celebrated his first career hits and RBI, going 2-for-3 in the game.
On a brighter note, the Marlins had two prospects selected as Florida Complex League All-Stars. Left-handed pitcher Jonas Uzcategui excelled with a 3.81 ERA and 42 strikeouts across 15 games, while Hyun Seung Lee showcased his offensive prowess with a .309/.396/.569 slash line, hitting six home runs and driving in 40 RBIs.
