In an exciting showdown on Wednesday, the Marysville High girls volleyball team faced off against Live Oak, showcasing their resilience and talent in a gripping five-set match. Starting three sophomores in the lineup, Marysville displayed the youthful energy and potential that head coach Annie Wooten has been nurturing this season.
The match, part of the Northern Section competition, was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts, ultimately concluding with Marysville edging out Live Oak with scores of 26-24, 21-25, 25-8, 20-25, and 15-8. This victory improved Marysville’s record to 3-2, while Live Oak fell to 4-4.
Wooten expressed her confidence in the team, stating, “The potential is there,” and emphasized the drive of her players to succeed this season. The match highlighted this determination, particularly in the decisive fifth set, where sophomore Adorabella Shuler played a crucial role. Shuler delivered several key swings, including a pivotal hit that gave Marysville a 12-7 lead in the final set. This momentum propelled the team to secure three of the next four points, sealing the match against their rivals.
“(Shuler’s) grown a lot; she played as a freshman on varsity with me,” Wooten noted, reflecting on the development of her players. With only three returning members from last season, the team is in a phase of learning and adapting, as they transition from a more casual approach to a serious competitive mindset.
Marysville’s victory was marked by their ability to win the first, third, and last sets, demonstrating their capacity to perform under pressure. This match was their second consecutive five-set encounter of the week, showcasing their endurance and skill. Following this match, Marysville will have a break until Tuesday after Labor Day, when they host Colfax to kick off their Pioneer Valley League campaign, with the first serve scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
On the other hand, Live Oak is looking to regroup after the intense match, with their next challenge set for late Thursday, followed by three additional games on Friday as part of a tournament. Head coach Wendy Ehrke is focused on finding consistency within her squad, which is known for its defensive capabilities and ability to engage in long rallies. “It went back-and-forth so much – really that first set we should have won,” Ehrke remarked, acknowledging the competitive nature of the match and the effort put forth by her players.
Live Oak's standout players included Mylee Rodriguez, who led the team in kills, and Yuliana Alanis Meza, who excelled as the setter. Camila Del Rio Rodriguez also made significant contributions with her defensive skills as libero. Looking ahead, Live Oak will face Maxwell and Williams of Colusa County in two of their three matches scheduled for Friday.
As the season progresses, both teams are poised to build on their experiences from this match, with Marysville aiming to continue their winning streak and Live Oak seeking to bounce back and establish a stronger foothold in their upcoming games.
