MENDON — The Mendon football team continued its strong season with a dominant performance on Thursday, September 3, defeating Morenci with a decisive score of 58-6. The Hornets showcased their offensive prowess by scoring in every quarter, demonstrating their ability to control the game from start to finish.
In this lopsided victory, Mendon amassed an impressive 329 rushing yards on just 20 carries, averaging over 16 yards per carry. This remarkable statistic highlights the Hornets' effectiveness on the ground, allowing them to dictate the pace of the game.
The scoring opened with a spectacular 65-yard punt return touchdown by Xavior Zinsmaster, who also converted the extra point to put Mendon ahead 8-0 just a minute into the first quarter. This early score set the tone for the Hornets, who continued to build on their lead throughout the game.
Zak Iobe quickly followed with a 24-yard rushing touchdown, and shortly thereafter, quarterback Owen Klinger connected with Jaiden Moyer for a 48-yard touchdown pass. Zinsmaster capped off a strong first quarter with a 43-yard rushing touchdown, leaving Morenci trailing 28-0 by the end of the period.
Morenci managed to score early in the second quarter with a 59-yard pass play, but Mendon responded almost immediately. Iobe found the end zone again with a 47-yard run, and Zinsmaster added another touchdown with a five-yard rush, giving the Hornets a comfortable 42-6 lead at halftime.
As the second half progressed with a running clock, Mendon added two more touchdowns. Logan Stuart scored both times, first with an 18-yard run in the third quarter and then a spectacular 70-yard dash in the fourth, bringing the final score to 58-6. Morenci finished the game with 169 total yards of offense, significantly trailing Mendon's 391 yards.
Defensively, Mendon was anchored by Iobe, who recorded 13 tackles and recovered a fumble. Phoenix Dunson and Bryce contributed with seven tackles each, while Stuart and Moyer each added six tackles to the defensive effort.
Meanwhile, the Marcellus football team also celebrated a successful outing, improving to 2-0 with a home victory against Martin. The Wildcats relied heavily on their ground game, accumulating 279 rushing yards and averaging 11.2 yards per carry, ultimately winning the game 34-23.
Despite completing only one pass—a seven-yard connection from Cale Hackenberg to Matthew Lehew—Marcellus effectively controlled the game on the ground. Martelle Enright stood out with 137 rushing yards on 13 carries, scoring twice. Hackenberg also contributed with a touchdown run, finishing the game with 128 rushing yards.
Defensively, Marcellus was led by Blake Williams, who made 15 tackles, scored a defensive touchdown, and intercepted a pass. Lucas Hurley added 11 tackles, along with an interception and a fumble recovery, while Elijah Gaborik and Leighton Osborn contributed with solid defensive performances as well.
Both Mendon and Marcellus showcased their strengths on Thursday, setting the tone for what promises to be an exciting season ahead in high school football.
