The Miami Dolphins have found their new backup quarterback.
Miami acquired Kyle McCord from the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round draft pick, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McCord is expected to slide behind starter Malik Willis as the Dolphins continue reshaping their quarterback room before the regular season.
Interestingly, Miami is sending Green Bay the same draft pick it acquired when quarterback Quinn Ewers was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. The Dolphins also waived quarterback Cam Miller on Sunday, according to a source.
McCord arrives in Miami following an impressive finish to his preseason with Green Bay.
The former Syracuse and Ohio State quarterback played the entire preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals and threw four touchdown passes without an interception. His final touchdown, a 10-yard strike to Kisean Johnson in the closing seconds, completed Green Bay’s 42-38 comeback victory.
Packers coach Matt LaFleur praised McCord’s command afterward.

LaFleur also highlighted McCord’s willingness to remain in the pocket and deliver throws while facing pressure.
McCord entered Packers training camp competing with Kyron Drones for the No. 3 quarterback position behind Jordan Love and veteran Tyrod Taylor. A strong preseason opener against Pittsburgh helped McCord separate himself, eventually leading Green Bay to release Drones.
But with Taylor established behind Love, the Packers ultimately turned McCord’s strong preseason into future draft capital rather than risk losing him without compensation.
McCord was originally selected by Philadelphia in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL draft and spent his rookie season on the Eagles’ practice squad before joining Green Bay in January.
Now he’ll receive another opportunity in Miami.
The Dolphins needed depth after moving Ewers and Miller, and McCord’s preseason performance demonstrated he could provide it.
After spending the summer trying to prove he belonged in the NFL, McCord enters Week 1 just one play away from running Miami’s offense.
