Michael Carrick Suggests Bruno Fernandes Rotation Amid Congested Scheduele

After finishing third place in the Premier League last season, Manchester United have qualified for the Champions League for the first time since the 2023/24 season.

The Reds will have to wait until Thursday to see what teams United will be playing when the Champions League games commence.

Captain Bruno Fernandes will lead his side into the competitions, hoping to achieve a better run in all three domestic competitions, and make a good account for themselves upon their return to European competitions.

Manager Michael Carrick has expressed how challenging it will be with more games in this competition and has even hinted at the rotation of resting some key players, like Fernandes.

The first round of Champions League games is set to commence on September 8th, which sits in between the Everton game on the 6th and the Manchester City game on the 13th.

The Athletic has reported that Carrick has suggested resting key players to keep them fresh for both the league campaign and both of the cups.

"There’s the element talking about the squad and the depth, and as we go through the season and the waves and the momentum and keeping the boys in good form, but keeping them fresh as well."

Fernandes was mentioned during the press conference, having only missed six games for United since he signed in 2020, but at 31, he will begin to slow down at some point.

"So Bruno’s part of that. He’s a big player for us, he’s obviously our captain, but there’s still elements where we need to look after him."

The midfielder played the full 90 minutes as United lost 2-0 to Hull in the opening game, but failed to break down a low-block Hull defence. His effect on the Reds is vital; Fernandes will hope to help United record their first win of the season against Ipswich on Sunday.

United have been accompanied by their talisman for six straight seasons now; he's rarely missed a game for the Reds.

So, with the possibility of the omnipresent Fernandes being dropped, who will occupy the attacking midfielder role?

Mason Mount was brought in two seasons ago to challenge Fernandes for his position, but inconsistency with game time through injuries has led to him missing more games than the Reds have played over those past two seasons, so for him to make that step up would not be a guarantee.

Amad Diallo is also a possibility; his position is under constant scrutiny by other players. Bryan Mbeumo, who is primarily a right-winger, has had to play most of his games through the middle for the Reds to complement Amad's inclusion in the starting eleven.

He featured as a number ten for Sunderland in the Championship and was supremely impressive, but he hasn't featured there for the Reds since that loan spell.

Youri Tielemans was acquired this summer to operate as the more creative midfielder in the double pivot, being given more free-roaming capabilities. He's featured as an attacking midfielder for Aston Villa previously and holds the experience to fill Fernandes' boots, so he may be considered a preferred alternative.
