Micky Mellon, who took the helm at Oldham Athletic in October 2023, has expressed his satisfaction with the team's promising start to the new season. The Latics have amassed seven points from their first four matches, placing them fifth in the early League Two standings.
In an interview with BBC Radio Manchester, Mellon acknowledged that while the team feels they could have earned more points, their current position is encouraging. "We believe we should have more points, but on the flipside of that we’re in a good position," he stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus and hard work as the season progresses.
This season marks Oldham's return to the English Football League (EFL) after they secured promotion from the National League through the play-offs in the 2023-2024 season. Last year, they finished in 10th place in League Two, and the club has made significant changes during the summer transfer window by bringing in a dozen new players, including 11 free transfers and one loan signing.
Mellon is optimistic about the squad he has assembled, believing it has the potential to achieve great things. He remarked, "We’ve built a squad that we think will do well for us. We’ve got good players, some who can do more, but that’s only to be expected at this stage." He also noted that he anticipates some players will earn their spots in the starting eleven as the season unfolds, indicating a commitment to developing the team's talent.
This Saturday, Mellon will return to Tranmere Rovers, his former club where he achieved back-to-back promotions in 2018 and 2019. Reflecting on the upcoming match, he said, "Genuinely I do enjoy going back, but it’s not about me. I’m not playing. It’s only about picking up three valuable points for Oldham."
Tranmere, under new manager Darrell Clarke, has also started the season strongly, remaining unbeaten with one win and three draws in their opening four matches. Clarke, who has a history with Mellon as they both completed their coaching badges together, will be looking to secure a victory against Oldham as both teams vie for crucial points in the competitive League Two.
