In his inaugural game last year, Davis came tantalizingly close to breaking the Houston high school football single-game receiving yards record, finishing with an astounding 352 yards on 13 receptions and scoring five touchdowns against North Forest. His average of 27.1 yards per catch showcased his explosive playmaking ability, setting a high bar for the rest of the season.
However, this remarkable start came with challenges. During the game, Davis suffered a fractured thumb on his left hand, an injury that could have sidelined many players. For a wide receiver, such an injury poses significant hurdles, affecting everything from catching passes to handling the football. Despite this setback, Davis's resolve only strengthened. He demonstrated remarkable resilience, finishing the season with 94 receptions for 1,602 yards and a staggering 22 touchdowns in just 10 games.
"My determination was to help the team win and keep going and not give up just because of the injury," Davis reflected on his perseverance. As Davis enters his senior season, his focus has shifted from individual statistics to team success. After the Buffaloes made the playoffs for the first time in over two decades two years ago, they faced disappointment last year, finishing with a 3-7 record. Davis is determined to help his team return to postseason contention, stating, "It would mean a lot because a lot of people don’t think we can do it. But I believe in us."
Ranked No. 39 in the Chronicle's FAB 50 preseason player rankings, Davis will be crucial for Milby as they compete against strong district rivals, including 2025 champion Madison. Last season, he accounted for nearly half of the Buffaloes' receptions and a significant portion of their offensive production, averaging 161.2 total yards per game.
As the Buffaloes prepare for their upcoming matchup against Spring Woods, where Davis is just 94 yards shy of reaching 2,000 career receiving yards, all eyes will be on him. In their season opener, Milby secured a 62-40 victory against Houston Austin, with Davis contributing three touchdowns and 128 receiving yards.
While Davis's impressive numbers have drawn attention, he remains humble and focused on team dynamics. Coach Puente noted that even if Davis's individual statistics fluctuate due to increased defensive scrutiny, it could open opportunities for his teammates. "By no means is he a one-hit wonder," Puente asserted, confident that Davis will continue to shine and lead the Buffaloes in their quest for success this season.
