OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Mill Valley High School girls flag football team has earned the title of FOX4 HyVee Team of the Week, highlighting their impressive journey in the inaugural season of sanctioned girls flag football in Kansas.
Winning a championship is a significant achievement, but defending that title is a formidable challenge. The Lady Jaguars are determined to repeat their success after finishing last season with a remarkable 13-1 record. With a strong foundation from last year, they are poised to make another deep run in the competition.
This season marks a pivotal moment for girls flag football in Kansas, as it has officially been recognized as a varsity high school sport. The Jaguars are eager to embrace this new chapter and are ready to face the fresh competition that comes with it. Senior quarterback Kate Mikuls expressed her enthusiasm for the season ahead, stating, "We’re really excited for this year. Obviously, like new competition, so it’s going to be a lot different, but I think we’re ready and we’re expecting to be challenged this year. We’re hoping that we can defend our title."
As with any high school team, roster changes are inevitable each year. The Jaguars saw a significant turnover, with only 12 of the 28 players from last season returning. This influx of new talent includes many athletes who are new to the sport of football. Senior Paige Frost has taken on a mentorship role, emphasizing the joy of helping her teammates develop their skills. She remarked, "Watching them grow is a really fun exciting thing, so just being that bigger mentor to them is just huge to me."
Frost and her fellow returning players, having tasted the sweetness of victory, are eager to replicate that success this year. Their experience and leadership will be crucial as the team navigates the challenges of a new season.
Head Coach Carter Sebasto highlighted the dedication of his players, noting that their hard work has not gone unnoticed. Winning the Team of the Week award serves as a testament to their commitment. He stated, "Grateful for them to be rewarded with something like this because they’ve been putting in the work, dealing with the heat. We’ve been up every morning at 5 a.m. getting started, so they deserve something like this."
As the Mill Valley girls flag football team continues to grow and evolve, their focus remains on competing at the highest level and defending their championship title. With a blend of experienced players and new talent, the Lady Jaguars are set to make their mark in this exciting new era of high school sports.
