In a notable achievement for the Nebraska Cornhuskers football program, defensive back Donovan Jones has been named to the 2026 Allstate Wuerffel Trophy Watch List. This recognition marks the fourth player from Nebraska to earn a spot on the prestigious watchlist, which honors FBS players who excel in community service, academics, and athletics.
Entering his redshirt sophomore year, Jones had a standout performance last season, participating in all 13 games and starting in 11. His contributions on the field were significant; he recorded a total of 59 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and he tied for the team lead with five pass breakups. Jones’ ability to make impactful plays was evident as he achieved six or more tackles in five different games throughout the season.
Remarkably, Jones became the fifth freshman in Nebraska's history to record at least 50 tackles since the NCAA reinstated freshman eligibility in 1972. His defensive prowess played a crucial role in helping the Cornhuskers rank third nationally in pass defense in the 2025 season, showcasing his skills as a key player in the team's defensive lineup.
Off the field, Jones is equally committed to making a difference in the community. He has volunteered at various local organizations, including food banks, public schools, and community centers. His dedication to service was recognized earlier this year when he received the Sam Foltz 27 Hero Leadership Award, which honors student-athletes who demonstrate exemplary leadership both on and off the field.
Jones joins fellow Cornhuskers Jacory Barney (Paul Hornung Award), Justin Evans (Rimington Trophy), and Anthony Colandrea (Maxwell Award) as players named to award watchlists this season. The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is particularly significant, as it not only honors individual excellence but also highlights the importance of community service in the realm of college athletics.
As the season progresses, 11 student-athletes from the watchlist will be selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, with the winner of the Wuerffel Trophy being announced during The Home Depot College Football Awards show in December. The recipient will also serve as the captain of the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, further emphasizing the award's commitment to recognizing those who lead by example in their communities.
