FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – The New England Patriots are facing scrutiny regarding the depth of their edge rushing unit as they prepare for the upcoming NFL season. Following the offseason acquisition of Dre'Mont Jones, expectations have shifted, and many are eager to see how the team will perform with a mix of experience and youth on the roster.
Jones is set to anchor the edge position, with Elijah Ponder expected to start alongside him. The duo will be supported by two rookies, Gabe Jacas and Quintayvious Hutchins, who are still finding their footing in the league. Despite public concerns about the team's edge depth, the players in the room are exuding confidence and readiness to rise to the challenge.
In a recent interview, Jones expressed his belief in the talent present within the unit, stating, "I have a lot of confidence. We got a lot of young, talented players that are ready to compete and ready to show themselves, and you got to appreciate that." He emphasized the importance of the upcoming season and the potential for growth, adding that the team has a lot to be optimistic about.

We got to go out there and prove it and prove that the guys in the room are here for a reason."

He stated, "We’re so young as a group, and that should allow us to go out there and have fun and play to the best of our ability. Play with that young, naive confidence." Last season, Jones had a noteworthy stint with the Tennessee Titans, where he signed a one-year, $10 million contract. He participated in nine games, recording 4.5 sacks and 26 combined tackles before being traded to the Baltimore Ravens. Ponder, who joined the Patriots as an undrafted free agent in 2025, has already made an impact, playing in all 19 games last season and contributing four sacks and three fumble recoveries.
Jones praised Ponder's maturity and performance, saying, "Elijah comes off as a four-year-plus vet. He’s very confident in his ability. He knows what he’s doing. The intangibles he brings to the game are going to show a lot this year. And it’s been fun. He’s been a hell of a player."
As for Jacas and Hutchins, Jones acknowledged their growth, stating, "They still do their rookie shenanigans, but they’re growing a lot. They’re learning the game more and more. I’m impressed at how they’ve been translating the knowledge we gained in the classroom onto the field."
