New Seahawks owner Vinod Khosla discusses the future of Lumen Field

The Seattle Seahawks are about to have new owners for the first time since 1997. On Wednesday afternoon, the NFL owners voted unanimously to approve the record-breaking $9.6 billion dollar sale of the Seahawks franchise from the Paul G. Allen estate to Vinod Khosla and his family. Soon, there will be a new sheriff in town, so to speak.

On the topic of speaking, we did hear from Vinod Khosla himself. Following the approval of the sale, Khosla took to the podium to give remarks on this historic moment. After his opening remarks, a question was raised regarding the future of the iconic Lumen Field. And iconic is the word Khosla used when describing the venue with regards to the Seahawks' overall brand. He's right to make the connection, as the stadium is tantamount to a fortress when it comes to the legendary home field advantage the Seahawks boast.

However, that's really all he said. He stopped well short of making any commitment of the Seahawks remaining in the stadium. Khosla even said he is "hopeful" to "preserve" the brand. To me, that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of wanting to stick with Lumen in the long run. Khosla's full comments can be seen in the tweet below.

News of the approval of the sale come on the same day USA TODAY ranked Lumen Field as the No. 1 stadium in the NFL. Once again, I am taking this opportunity to bang the "SEAHAWKS DO NOT NEED A NEW STADIUM" drum as loud as I possibly can.

To borrow Khosla's word, I too am "hopeful" he truly means it when he says he wants to preserve this brand. Lumen Field is one of the only remaining stadiums in the NFL that has an iconic, recognizable look to it. In this day and age of bland, toaster-looking domes, having an open air stadium with a distinct architectural style that adds to the unique skyline of its city is becoming a rare sight to behold.
