Newcastle predicted XI vs West Brom: Woltemade set to start as Magpies rotate for EFL Cup

Newcastle United welcome West Bromwich Albion to St James’ Park on Wednesday night looking to book their place in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The Geordies opened their Premier League campaign with an encouraging 2-2 draw.

However, the focus now switches to a competition Newcastle have taken seriously in recent seasons.

The Magpies lifted the EFL Cup in 2025 and have reached the quarter-finals in each of the last four campaigns.

New Newcastle boss Matthias Jaissle will be keen to keep that record intact.

There were plenty of doubts surrounding Newcastle heading into the new season after a summer of major change.

However, their performance at the weekend against Liverpool offered plenty of encouragement.

The Magpies led twice and were unfortunate to surrender three points via a stoppage-time penalty, with Jaissle impressed by the fight and energy shown by his young squad.

West Brom will provide a stern test.

The Baggies have won all three of their competitive fixtures this season, scoring nine goals in the process.

Their latest victory was a 3-1 comeback against recently relegated Burnley, with Isaac Price scoring twice.

James Morrison’s side also beat Rotherham United 4-1 in the first round of this competition and will arrive on Tyneside believing they can cause another upset.

But Newcastle have a strong record against the Baggies, winning seven of their last 14 meetings and four of their last six at St James’ Park.

Jaissle is expected to make several changes as Newcastle prepare for a tough Premier League fixture on Saturday.

Tino Livramento and Joelinton remain sidelined, while Dan Burn is also unavailable after suffering ankle ligament damage.

William Osula should be fit despite picking up a knock against Liverpool, but Nick Woltemade, 24, is expected to replace him at the top of the attack.

Joe Willock could be rewarded with a starting berth after scoring off the bench in the league opener.

New signings Aladji Bamba (£35 million) and Bazoumana Toure (£42m) are both expected to make their full debuts.
