EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Ducks expressed their discontent when Boise State players danced to the iconic song "Shout" during their season opener on Saturday. The Ducks have a longstanding tradition of playing this song, famously featured in the film "National Lampoon's Animal House," during breaks at Autzen Stadium.
This beloved tradition includes a video scoreboard presentation that showcases a Nike commercial from 2015, featuring Oregon legends like Marcus Mariota and Joey Harrington reenacting the film's memorable toga party scene. Fans at Autzen Stadium eagerly participate, singing and dancing along, with Ducks players often joining in the fun.
However, during the game against Boise State, which was tied at 24-24, the Broncos' players decided to join in on the festivities by dancing to the song. This prompted a strong reaction from the Oregon squad. Quarterback Dante Moore remarked, "When we saw that, it was like, 'Hey, you can’t do that in our home.' So we made sure that we go out here and capitalize and finish drives and put some points on the board."
The fourth quarter saw both teams trading field goals, but it was Moore who ultimately delivered the decisive blow, connecting with Dakorien Moore for a game-winning 62-yard touchdown pass. This crucial play allowed the Ducks to secure a 31-27 victory over the Broncos.
Boise State's head coach, Spencer Danielson, explained that the team had been using "Shout" as a motivational tool during practices, particularly for the fourth quarter. He expressed pride in his players' ability to maintain their fighting spirit throughout the game. "What everybody saw today is what we’ve been doing for weeks now, and I’m proud of our guys to find a way to continue fighting," Danielson said.
Moore also noted that tight end Jamari Johnson was particularly incensed by the Broncos' antics. "It motivated us, especially JJ. He was screaming at me like it’s some BS," Moore shared. Johnson himself confirmed the sentiment, stating, "You know they were having their fun, but I kind of took that a little disrespect because it’s our song. You know, it’s our song."
