The Orlando Magic have moved up one spot in Bleacher Report’s latest NBA power rankings, climbing from No. 16 to No. 15 entering the 2026-27 season, indicating a slight but very marginal improvement.
Orlando’s offseason was relatively quiet compared to some of the league’s biggest acquisitions. The Magic re-signed Jevon Carter and Jonathan Isaac while also bringing back a familiar face in Nikola Vučević to replace the departing Moritz Wagner trading defense for offense.
While Vučević may represent an upgrade in overall talent, the veteran center is well past the prime of his career and much of his offensive value now depends on his ability to consistently knock down shots from beyond the arc. He was signed to be a perimeter threat and overall lift for the offense, especially for the second unit.
The bigger storyline surrounding Orlando, however, is the organization’s continued belief in its young core led by Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.
The Magic are convinced a coaching change with the hiring of Sean Sweeney can help boost more from a roster that has plenty of talent but hasn't yet translated it into sustained postseason success after failing to advance past the first round in three consecutive seasons.
There is reason for optimism. Orlando has dealt with significant health issues in consecutive seasons, limiting how much of its core has been able to play together. When the Magic finally got relatively healthy entering last season’s playoffs, they pushed the top-seeded Detroit Pistons to seven games in the first round, and Wagner getting injured was a major reason the Magic lost.
With Banchero, Wagner, Desmond Bane and Jalen Suggs expected to have a better opportunity to stay healthy together, Orlando has a chance to prove that last season’s disappointing result wasn't a true reflection of its potential.
On the Full Court Magic Podcast, I reacted to the schedule release with my partner and co-host, Don Strouble. Here is my optimistic record prediction.
"I'm going to go—I do think this team can be better under Sean Sweeney. I think you're going to see, even if it's not dramatic playoff improvement, Don, I do think you're going to see a bit more regular-season consistency. I think that's going to pay dividends. I'm not going to say too dramatic of an improvement; I do think this is a very similar Magic team from last year.
Don, I think I'll go four wins better from last year. Let's go 49 and 33. When I mention 49 and 33, I think that's good enough to at least be sixth in the Eastern Conference. While I say health is important, it's really about the offensive consistency. We know that this team can perform on defense. But how are Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner going to work?
