The quarterback position is often regarded as the most challenging and pivotal role in football, leading to questions about why any NFL team would part ways with a young and talented player in this position. Recently, the Green Bay Packers made the decision to trade 23-year-old Kyle McCord, who had emerged as one of the standout quarterbacks during the preseason, to the Miami Dolphins on the eve of final roster cuts.
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst addressed the rationale behind this trade during a press conference on Tuesday. The primary factor influencing the decision was the team's reluctance to carry three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster. With the Dolphins expressing interest in a trade, Gutekunst recognized that the likelihood of retaining McCord through the practice squad was slim.
“He played so well during the preseason. We were contemplating, do we keep three? Do we try to get him to the practice squad, what’s the likelihood of that? When somebody calls you and starts talking about a trade, the likelihood of getting him to the practice squad probably isn’t strong,” Gutekunst explained.
The trade was finalized on Sunday, with the Packers agreeing to send McCord to Miami in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 NFL Draft. Gutekunst expressed satisfaction in making the deal with Jon-Eric Sullivan, a former Packers executive who now serves as the Dolphins' general manager.
Had McCord been released, he was almost guaranteed to be claimed off waivers, making the trade a strategic move for the Dolphins to secure his services. McCord had previously signed a futures deal with the Packers in January after spending his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles. His impressive performance during the preseason, which included four touchdown passes in the final game, showcased his potential.
Gutekunst noted that McCord “worked diligently” to enhance his skills during his time in Green Bay, and head coach Matt LaFleur consistently praised his composure on the field. While Gutekunst acknowledged that it was a difficult decision to let McCord go, he also recognized that Miami presents a better opportunity for the young quarterback. In Miami, McCord is expected to serve as the backup to Malik Willis, a former Packers player.
In contrast, the Packers have veteran Tyrod Taylor positioned as the backup to Jordan Love for the upcoming season. However, Taylor's career is nearing its end, raising questions about the team’s quarterback situation for the future. Gutekunst emphasized that the Packers will continue their approach of identifying, acquiring, and developing quarterbacks moving forward.
“It’s always tough whenever you trade a player that you like and you think has an upside, but he wasn’t going to be the No. 2 here most likely, and heading into next year, who knows? It’s our job to find the next guy and develop the next guy. That’s what we do,” Gutekunst stated.
As the Packers move forward, the decision to trade McCord will be closely examined. While securing a draft pick for a player who was recently signed to a futures deal is a notable achievement, the team has also parted with a promising young quarterback at a critical position. The Packers are now looking to their next reclamation project, signing Kedon Slovis, a former Arizona Cardinals quarterback, to their practice squad on Tuesday.
