GREEN BAY – Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur said he expects Josh Jacobs to remain on the roster while the running back’s legal proceedings play out.
Jacobs was charged Aug. 27 with two misdemeanors: battery and criminal damage to property after an incident at his home in May. The criminal complaint filed this week said Jacobs threw a woman to the ground, causing her to hit her head. Both charges carry maximum sentences of nine months in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
After the Packers’ preseason game against Arizona on Aug. 28, LaFleur was asked if he expects Jacobs to be on the team regardless of how his legal process plays out.
“I fully anticipate him being a member of our team,” LaFleur said.
LaFleur said he couldn’t comment on whether Jacobs will be available for the Sept. 13 regular-season opener, but he said the Packers expect to keep Jacobs on the roster during the legal process. There’s always the chance the NFL could suspend Jacobs regardless of what happens with the case, though the league usually waits until cases clear the court system before levying suspensions.
Jacobs is scheduled to make an initial appearance before a Brown County Circuit Court commissioner at 9 a.m. Nov. 17.
When asked if he expects Jacobs to remain with the team throughout the court process, LaFleur said: “You’ve gotta let everything play out, but I anticipate him being a member of our football team.”
