The Pakistan Under-19 cricket team showcased their dominance in the opening match of their four-match one-day series against England, securing a convincing 177-run victory at the Arundel Castle Cricket Club Ground on Wednesday. This victory not only marks a strong start for Pakistan but also gives them a 1-0 lead in the series, with the next match set to take place on Saturday, September 12, in Guildford.
After being sent in to bat first, Pakistan faced an early challenge, finding themselves at 41-2. However, a remarkable partnership between Usman Khan and captain Farhan Yousaf turned the game around. The duo formed a record-breaking third-wicket partnership of 268 runs, which is now the highest for Pakistan in Under-19 cricket history and the fifth-highest overall in the format.
Usman Khan, the left-handed opener, was particularly impressive, scoring a brilliant 151 runs off 136 balls, which included 15 boundaries and four sixes. His innings was marked by a rapid acceleration after reaching his century in 103 balls. Farhan Yousaf also contributed significantly, making 115 runs from 133 balls, hitting 12 fours and a six. Their partnership propelled Pakistan to a formidable total of 332-9 in their 50 overs.
Despite losing their wickets at regular intervals, Abdul Qadir added a valuable 26 runs towards the end of the innings, ensuring that Pakistan finished strong, even with nine wickets down. The impressive total set a daunting target for the England Under-19 team, who struggled to keep pace with the required run rate.
In response, England's batting lineup faltered under pressure from Pakistan's bowlers. Left-arm pacer Mohammad Sayyam was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for just 39 runs in 9.1 overs. He was well supported by Rizwanullah, Niqab Shafiq, and Ahmed Hussain, who each took two wickets, leading to England's collapse at 155 all out in just 35.1 overs.
England's innings was characterized by a lack of partnerships, with Isaac Mohammed providing some resistance with a fighting 72 runs. However, with England slumping to 85-6, their chances of mounting a serious challenge diminished rapidly. Luke Hands contributed 28 runs, but the team was unable to recover from the early setbacks.
Sayyam's performance capped off a comprehensive victory for Pakistan, who dismissed England with 89 balls remaining in the innings. Looking ahead, Pakistan will aim to build on this momentum as they prepare for the second ODI in Guildford, seeking to extend their lead in the series.
