The Pakistan men's volleyball team is setting its sights on a remarkable upset at the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, scheduled from September 26 to October 4. With the team drawn into Group A alongside formidable opponents Japan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan, manager and former captain Naseer Ahmed is optimistic about their chances of advancing in the tournament.
Pakistan faces a significant challenge right from the start, as they will compete against Japan, currently ranked sixth in the world. In contrast, Pakistan holds the 38th position globally. Despite the odds, Naseer expressed confidence in his team's potential to perform well. "Yes, I am confident that the team will do well," he stated in an interview with The Express Tribune.
While the team may not be viewed as a strong contender for medals, Naseer believes they possess the experience and skill necessary to surprise their rivals. "Definitely it will be our target to challenge them (Japan). If we fail there then we can beat Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan which will help us move to the top eight," he explained. This strategy highlights the importance of their opening match against Japan, which could set the tone for the rest of the tournament.
The squad is bolstered by a core group of players who participated in the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou, where they finished fifth. Approximately nine members from that roster are expected to return, alongside three promising newcomers, including an Under-19 setter and a middle blocker. This blend of experience and youth could be pivotal in their quest for success.
Under the guidance of Spanish head coach Luis Alberto, who has been preparing the team for several months, the players have been undergoing rigorous training. Naseer noted that the team has been training for four hours daily over the past month and a half, with a training camp held at Wah Cantt before moving to Liaquat Gymnasium for continued preparations. "Alberto is a good coach and is working harder on the boys, and I hope a better lot will be prepared," he added.
As the team gears up for the tournament, they face some logistical challenges, including issues with air-conditioning at their training facility, which is crucial for maintaining optimal conditions during intense training sessions. Despite the easing temperatures in Islamabad, effective cooling remains essential as they prepare for the demanding matches ahead.
Historically, Pakistan's best performance in the Asian Games came in 1962 when they secured a bronze medal in Jakarta. The current squad aims to revive that competitive spirit and make a mark in this year's tournament. Local coaches Saeed Ahmad and Kashif Maznoor are also assisting Alberto in the training efforts.
With the Pakistan Sports Board financing 14 members of the squad and the Pakistan Volleyball Federation covering the remaining four, the team is focused on its immediate goal: to compete fiercely against Japan, secure victories against Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, and ultimately reach the top eight in the tournament. With a mix of seasoned players and emerging talent, Pakistan hopes to transform its underdog status into a compelling performance at the Asian Games.
