Panthers RB Jonathon Brooks Misses Practice Due to Soreness, Coach Optimistic for Season Opener

Carolina Panthers running back Jonathon Brooks was absent from practice on Wednesday due to soreness, but head coach Dave Canales expressed confidence that the injury will not hinder his availability for the upcoming season opener. Canales stated, "I’m very optimistic he’ll be available for Week 1," during a press briefing, as reported by ESPN's Mike Kaye.

While Canales confirmed that Brooks is experiencing some discomfort, he did not disclose the specific area affected. This lack of detail has raised some questions among fans and analysts, but the head coach's upbeat assessment suggests that the team is not overly worried about the situation.

Brooks has faced significant challenges in his career, having undergone two ACL surgeries on his right knee. Despite these setbacks, he participated fully in training camp and played in two preseason games this summer, managing to log 17 snaps. His resilience has been notable, especially considering he tore his ACL against the Philadelphia Eagles in December 2024, just a year after suffering a similar injury while playing for the University of Texas. This history of injuries caused him to miss the entire 2025 season.

As a rookie in 2024, Brooks appeared in three games, accumulating 12 touches for 45 yards. His performance, albeit limited, has shown promise, and the Panthers are hopeful he can contribute significantly this season.

In the Panthers' backfield, Brooks is expected to serve as a complementary player alongside Chuba Hubbard, who is anticipated to take on a larger role. Additionally, veteran AJ Dillon is also part of the active roster, providing depth to the running back position. Meanwhile, Trevor Etienne is currently on injured reserve but has a designation to return as he recovers from an ankle injury.

As the Panthers prepare for their season opener, the team remains focused on ensuring that Brooks is ready to make an impact. With the regular season fast approaching, the health of their running back corps will be crucial for the team's offensive strategy moving forward.
